Travel Summary

  • Exercise caution in the border areas with Thailand, Laos or China. The situation in ethnic states where armed groups operate is volatile. There is ongoing conflict in parts of Kachin State and the far north of Shan State. There has also been low-level fighting in central Shan State and Karen State near the Thailand/Burma border in recent months.

  • There is a high threat from terrorism in Burma. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers. See Safety and Security - Terrorism.

  • You should exercise caution, avoid all demonstrations and large gatherings and avoid taking photographs or videos of the military, the police or demonstrations. See Safety and Security - Political Situation.

  • There are stringent restrictions on freedom of movement and speech. British Embassy officials are not allowed to travel freely outside Rangoon without prior permission from the Burmese government, except to a limited number of destinations. Consular assistance in an emergency may therefore be restricted or delayed.

  • Around 7,300 British tourists visited Burma in 2011 (Burmese Central Statistical Organisation figures). Most visits are trouble-free. See General - Consular Assistance Statistics.

  • You should take out comprehensive travel and medical insurance before travelling. See General - Insurance.

  • Credit and Debit cards are not widely accepted in Burma. Ensure that you bring a sufficient supply of US Dollars in pristine condition for the duration of your stay. See General - Money.
