Travel Summary

  • In the early hours of Sunday 20 May, an earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck Northern Italy, approximately 22 miles north west of Bologna. There has been one aftershock; more are possible.   We are aware of at least one fatality but are not aware that any British Nationals have been affected. Consular officials are liaising with local authorities.
  • On 19 May an explosion outside a school in Brindisi caused fatalities and injuries to a number of students.
  • Pope Benedict XVI will be visiting Milan from 1 – 3 June in order to participate in the 7th World Meeting of Families. It is highly likely that traffic in Milan will be affected during this weekend, with also some disruption to underground services.

  • There is a general threat from terrorism. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers. See Safety and Security - Terrorism.
